IDEA Public Union participated in the World Conservation Congress organized by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature – IUCN – during 1 to 11 September in the city of Honolulu of USA, the State of Hawaii.
As a member of IUCN, IDEA has taken close participation in the meetings held within the framework of the Congress, as well as in the election of the new president and regional representatives of the organization, and setting the goals for the next 4 years. During the discussions over approving slogans associated with the conservation of nature, perils facing the biodiversity in our country and the regions were brought to the attention of the world society.
The unique pavilion of IDEA Public Union, installed at the place where the Congress took place, aroused much interest in the attendees of the event.
Walls of the said stand were decorated with paintings of Leyla Aliyeva, the founder and head of IDEA Public Union, the initiator of “Baku Corner”, personifying rare fauna species of Azerbaijan. The images of leopard and gazelle reflect the significance of this charming animals for our nature, and the perils they are facing. Thousands of visitors of the pavilion, along with enjoying its magnificence, received comprehensive information about Azerbaijani nature’s treasures. Winners of the small competitions held among the visitors were honoured with various valuable keepsakes from “Baku Corner”.
Projects on conservation of biodiversity, implemented by IDEA Public Union during the last 5 years, and achievements reached by the organisation have been reflected in the pavilion, documentaries made to show Azerbaijan’s magnificent nature, including the films shot in Goygol, Aghgol and Shrivan National Parks within the framework of the project “9 miracles of Azerbaijan”, initiated by IDEA, were demonstrated, and comprehensive information was given about our country’s ecosystem. Visitors were presented various promotion materials and enlightening products of IDEA. IDEA’s activities were highly appreciated by Congress attendees, and the local public.
IUCN’s Executive Director Mrs Inger Andersen praised IDEA’s active participation in the Congress, and its magnificent pavilion. She also thanked Leyla Aliyeva for the support provided to projects implemented by IUCN in connection with conservation of nature, and efforts towards protecting the environment.
Held under the slogan of “Planets at the crossroads”, the 2016 World Conservation Congress was attended by over 10 thousand representatives from 192 countries. The biggest achievement of the Congress was adoption of the post-2015 agenda known as “Hawaii obligations” on conservation of nature, and the road map. Basic obligations reflected in the document covers such issues as closing specially protected areas to the industry, protection of the open sea, conservation of forests etc.
Baku Corner’ s attractive corner was installed at the Congress of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
