Vice-president of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, founder of IDEA Public Association and Goodwill Ambassador of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Leyla Aliyeva met Deputy Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Ibrahim Thiaw in the framework of the 4th World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue, May 5.

Exchange of opinions was held at the meeting on protection of environment and sustainable development issues, works carried out on local and regional levels, and proposals put forward were discussed. Leyla Aliyeva informed the UN official of the achievements reached by IDEA for the last five years, projects currently being implemented, and the future plans.

The upcoming 3rd meeting of the UN Environment Assembly was touched upon, the event’s dedication to the issue of contamination was valued as worth of esteem, and seriousness of this problem in the contemporary world was emphasized. Leyla Aliyeva talked about the projects and actions carried out by the IDEA campaign - led by her - towards preventing contamination of the environment, recycling and waste management, and expressed a hope UNEP would participate in the activities carried out in Azerbaijan in this direction.

IDEA’s endeavour on protection of the marine environment in Azerbaijan, in particular, aiming to protect the endangered sturgeon, as well as the project on cleaning up the delta of the Kur, which is of importance in terms of facilitating the increase of this fish, were talked about during the meeting.

Highly appreciating the works carried out by IDEA towards protecting the environment, Ibrahim Thiaw said UNEP attaches importance to close cooperation with the Azerbaijani government, non-government organizations, and other parties concerned.

Considering that objectives and duties of UNEP and IDEA are concurring, the parties underscored that they were interested in continuing the cooperation and extending it further.

At the end of the meeting, Leyla Aliyeva invited UNEP Executive Director Erik Solheim to visit Azerbaijan.
