Opening of the exhibition “Azerbaijani Carpets in Art” took place in the Festivals Palace within the framework of the Days of Azerbaijani Culture held in Cannes, July 15. 

The opening ceremony was attended by Azerbaijan’s First Lady, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mehriban Aliyeva and family members.

Works displayed at the exhibition “Azerbaijani Carpets in Art” are distinguished for the fact that they are demonstrated for the first time. Held with the Heydar Aliyev Foundation’s organizational support, the exhibition informs visitors of the history of the Azerbaijani carpetart, and its present and world-wide dissemination. 

Works by Azerbaijani artists Latif Karimov, Vugar Muradov, Butunay Hagverdiyev and Elchin Valiyev – modern, pop-art type works and installations are presented at the exhibition. 

7 works by young artist Elchin Valiyevare displayed at the exhibition. Specifically made for the exhibition “Azerbaijani Carpets in Art” are distinguished for their original nature. Made by oil paint and based on carpet motifs, these works create vivid impression on visitors with 3D effects. 

Carpet sketches of People’s Artist, eminent master of carpet Latif Karimov related to 1969-1970 are demonstrated.  15 works here are demonstrated for the first time. 

At the exhibition, also carpet installation of well-known artist Butunay Hagverdiyev is displayed. Presented for the first time, this work revives Azerbaijani carpet ornaments. Made of wood, the installation is distinguished for its 3D effects. The work, along with being presented besides the sketches of Latif Karimov, demonstrates the history of the national carpet art, its development and application in contemporary  arts.

At the exhibition is also demonstrated a video installation reflecting carpet motifs used in works by world artists of the 15-16thcenturies. 

Works by well-known artist Vugar Muradov are also demonstrated here. Made with oil paint in portrait and landscape styles, these works present national carpet ornaments in unique form.

The exhibition “Azerbaijani Carpets in Art” will be open for the public as of July 16 and will continue until July 31.
